Tumakuru: Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. K. Vidyakumari said that everyone should adopt a healthy lifestyle like using bicycles every day for better health.

As part of the World Bicycle Day celebrations, the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, District Health and Family Welfare Department and the Office of the District Surveillance Officer under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD).

She was speaking after flagging off the cyclethon programme.

There is no greater activity than cycling to exercise the body. Several studies have proved that cycling is the most effective exercise in terms of physical and mental health. Nowadays, bicycles are cornered, we are reluctant to walk, we are heavily dependent on two-wheelers and four-wheelers, unlike other vehicles, cycle don’t cause pollution. So it’s a good choice for environmental concerns, cycling improves cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength. Contributes to a healthy life. When you ride a bicycle, your physical strength increases, by cycling every day, we can get rid of many deadly diseases and stay physically fit as well, thus called upon everyone, including students, to use bicycles in their daily activities, she said.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr. Manjunath said that in the modern world, many people are falling prey to illness due to lack of busy work and physical activities. “74 per cent of deaths are due to non-communicable diseases in the country, our ancestors were physically working hard and consuming good quality food but in now a days as all these are decreasing, non-communicable diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart-related diseases is noticed to everyone,” he said, adding that the health department is organizing a cycle marathon to create awareness among the public about the benefits of using bicycles.

There are separate non-communicable units in the district for diagnosis and treatment of non-communicable diseases. There are doctors and staff in all the units. Diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer screening, stroke diseases are done, over 30 years all those above can seek treatment at the NCD unit and efforts will be made to convince the common man about the benefits of using bicycles by organizing a cycle marathon by the health department, said District Surveillance Officer Dr. B.S. Sudhakar, who is also the organiser of the event.

This awareness programme started from the Zilla Panchayat office and proceeded via Amanikere Road, near the office of the District Health and Family Welfare Department. On this occasion, as part of The World Bicycle Day celebrations, a cyclothon was organized to create awareness among the public about the major risk factors of non-communicable diseases such as unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical stress, alcohol and tobacco consumption and irregular and unhealthy lifestyles and adverse effects of air pollution. Various officials, staff, school and college students, etc. participated in the Cycleton.
