Two daily wage labourers drowned in a lake near Bannerghatta after an old coracle reportedly tore apart while they were attempting to board it, police said.

According to reports, the incident occurred when the workers tried to use the coracle to cross the lake. The fragile structure allegedly gave way midway, throwing them into the water.

Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the spot after learning about the incident. Rescue operations were launched immediately, but the two men could not be saved.

Bodies recovered after search operation

Authorities later recovered the bodies from the lake and shifted them for post-mortem examination.

Police have registered a case and initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Officials are also examining whether safety negligence or the use of damaged equipment contributed to the tragedy.

Concerns over safety around lakes

The incident has raised concerns about the use of unsafe and poorly maintained coracles and boats in water bodies around Bengaluru and nearby rural areas.

Residents have called for stricter monitoring and improved safety measures near lakes frequently accessed by workers and locals.

Experts say water-related accidents often increase during monsoon and pre-monsoon periods due to changing water levels and unsafe crossings.

Authorities urge caution

Police and civic authorities advised the public to avoid using damaged boats or makeshift watercraft and to follow safety precautions near lakes and reservoirs.

They also stressed the importance of life jackets and proper supervision while crossing water bodies.

The deaths have triggered grief among the victims’ families and local communities
