Two minor boys were killed in separate road accidents in Bengaluru on Saturday night, prompting police to initiate action against both the drivers involved and the parents who allegedly allowed the teenagers to operate vehicles.
Class 10 student killed in hit-and-run
In the first incident, 16-year-old Suraj Kumar, a Class 10 student from Sarvabhouma Nagar, died after a tractor allegedly hit the scooter he was riding on RTO Road within the Mico Layout traffic police limits.
According to police, Suraj and his classmate Pushkar Ram Lohar, both aged 16, were returning home after refuelling their scooter when a speeding tractor reportedly brushed against the vehicle. The impact caused both boys to fall onto the road. Suraj suffered fatal injuries after the tractor’s rear wheel allegedly ran over his head.
The tractor driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. Police have registered a case and are examining CCTV footage to identify and trace the driver. Pushkar escaped with minor injuries and received treatment at a nearby hospital.
Teen dies in head-on collision
In another tragic incident near SMVT Railway Station, 15-year-old Riyan, a Class 10 student from Murphy Town, lost his life in a head-on collision involving a motorcycle and a scooter.
Police said Riyan was riding a motorcycle when it collided with a scooter ridden by a 32-year-old man. Both riders fell onto the road, and Riyan sustained severe head injuries. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.
The scooter rider is undergoing treatment and is reported to be out of danger.
Police to act against parents
Traffic police have stated that separate cases will also be registered against the parents of the deceased boys for allegedly allowing minors to ride motor vehicles.
The twin tragedies have once again highlighted the dangers of underage driving and the need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations.
