An act of honesty by a Bengaluru Uber driver has drawn widespread appreciation online, including praise from Zoho Corporation founder Sridhar Vembu, who described the incident as an example of the “grace and dignity” often seen among ordinary citizens.
The incident came to light after fund manager Harsh Gupta Madhusudan shared his experience on social media, recounting how the driver went out of his way to return a wallet that had been accidentally left behind in the cab.
Driver tracks down passenger to return wallet
According to Madhusudan’s post, he had unknowingly left his wallet in the Uber after completing a ride in the city. The driver, identified as Toguru, discovered the wallet in the back seat only after the trip had ended.
Instead of ignoring it, the driver made efforts to return it to the passenger. Using the identification inside the wallet, he managed to trace the passenger’s phone number and contacted him.
The driver then travelled back some distance and located Madhusudan at a crowded conference venue, eventually returning the wallet safely.
The passenger said he had not even realised the wallet was missing until the driver contacted him.
Reluctant to accept reward
Madhusudan said he expressed his gratitude by offering a small token of appreciation, which the driver accepted only after considerable hesitation.
“There is so much goodness in this world which we often fail to recognise,” he wrote in his post, while thanking the driver and hoping that Uber India would acknowledge his actions internally.
The story quickly gained attention on social media, with many users praising the driver’s honesty and kindness.
Sridhar Vembu praises the gesture
Reacting to the viral post, Sridhar Vembu reshared the story and highlighted how such incidents reflect deeper societal values.
“Heart-warming story. I come across this in rural areas very often. India is intrinsically a high-trust society. People with the most challenging economic circumstances act with such grace and dignity that I am in awe of them,” he wrote.
Social media celebrates everyday kindness
The story sparked a wave of positive reactions online, with many users sharing similar experiences of honesty from drivers and strangers.
One user recalled losing a shopping bag worth nearly ₹20,000 and having it returned in a similar manner. Others said the incident served as a reminder that kindness and integrity continue to exist in everyday interactions.
In another recent example from Bengaluru, a cab driver reportedly spent nearly an hour searching for a passenger who had forgotten a bag containing important items including a passport, wallet and a Canadian permanent residency card.
Such incidents continue to highlight the trust and goodwill that often define everyday interactions between citizens in the city.
