Bengaluru: A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 70-year-old maternal grandmother following months of arguments over his unemployment and what police described as her repeated efforts to encourage him to become more responsible.
The accused, identified as Prajwal, a resident of KS Layout, has been booked for the murder of D Gowramma, police said.
Grandmother was living alone
According to the police, Prajwal’s mother, Lakshmi, had asked him to stay with Gowramma at her house in Kenchagoravaiahna Doddi near Bannerghatta to look after her while she lived alone. Gowramma’s husband, Dodda Durugaiah, had travelled to Kanakapura for work.
Investigators said tensions had been building between the grandmother and grandson for several months. Police said Gowramma frequently advised Prajwal, a college dropout, to stop wasting time and money and encouraged him to find stable employment. He had reportedly been unemployed for the past few months, leading to frequent arguments.
Police say accused confessed to mother
According to investigators, Gowramma once again spoke to Prajwal about his future on Tuesday night before retiring to bed.
Police alleged that at around 2 am, Prajwal went to the kitchen, picked up a knife and slit her throat while she was asleep.
After the incident, he allegedly returned to his home in KS Layout and confessed the crime to his mother before fleeing the area.
Accused arrested after manhunt
Following the alleged confession, police launched a search operation and traced Prajwal to a hideout near Bannerghatta on Wednesday afternoon, where he was arrested.
A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway to establish the complete sequence of events.
Police said they are continuing to gather evidence and record statements as part of the ongoing probe.
