Bengaluru: The Congress raised concern on Friday February 18 about Muslim girls being denied education and requested that the government withdraw the Waqf Department’s circular to minority institutions asking them to adhere to hijab norms, which violates the High Court’s order.
Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah informed in a joint press conference with Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President D. K. Shivakumar that the HC order only applies to institutions whose College Development Committees (CDCs) have mandated uniforms, not all colleges. “The Waqf Department has issued a circular stating that the order applies to the department’s residential schools and colleges. In the department’s institutions, there is no CDC. As a result, the circular violates the HC order,” he added.
Siddaramaiah met with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, along with a delegation of minorities, and urged him to withdraw the circular immediately. “He has informed us that he will look into the matter. I asked him to follow the HC’s order and withdraw the circular immediately,” he said.
