A 27-year-old woman was apprehended while attempting to smuggle prohibited items into the Central Prison Parappana Agrahara by concealing them inside her body, officials confirmed.
The accused, identified as Ritika Rai, had arrived at the prison on March 26 around 4 pm with a valid visitor pass to meet an undertrial inmate, Farhan Khan. The incident occurred in the prison’s general interview section, where all visitors undergo mandatory security screening before being allowed to meet inmates.
Suspicion during routine screening
According to prison authorities, a woman constable conducting a routine physical check grew suspicious during the screening process. Acting on this suspicion, officials carried out a more detailed search.
The search revealed that Rai had concealed three packets containing tobacco-like substances along with three Airtel 5G SIM cards inside a private part of her body, in an attempt to bypass security checks.
Contraband seized, case registered
The seized items were immediately handed over to the jurisdictional police. A case has been registered at the Parappana Agrahara police station against both Ritika Rai and the inmate Farhan Khan.
Officials stated that the charges have been filed under provisions of the Karnataka Prisons (Amendment) Act, 2022, along with Section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with dishonest or fraudulent concealment of property.
Ongoing attempts to breach prison security
Authorities highlighted that such incidents underline the persistent attempts to smuggle banned items into prisons, particularly communication devices like SIM cards, which can pose serious security risks.
Prison officials reiterated that stringent screening protocols are in place and continue to be strengthened to prevent such breaches. They also commended the alertness of the staff in detecting the concealment and preventing the entry of contraband into the prison.
