Bengaluru: A Bengaluru woman has sparked a debate on the city’s soaring cost of living after revealing that she spent more than ₹17,000 within the first two days of August, with several monthly bills still left to pay.
The woman, identified as Falguni, shared a video on Instagram detailing her expenses, saying the amount had already reached ₹17,200 before the month had properly begun.
Rent takes the biggest share
Beginning her video with the remark, “Tell me you live in Bengaluru without telling me you live in Bengaluru,” Falguni explained that she paid ₹15,000 as monthly rent on the first day of August.
She also spent around ₹750 on food and essentials ordered through Swiggy and Zepto.
The following day, she paid ₹630 for a salon visit, spent ₹75 on pani puri, bought mangoes for ₹100, and made an unplanned purchase of ₹670 after spotting a sale at a retail store.
By the end of the second day, her total spending had climbed to ₹17,200.
More bills still waiting
Falguni pointed out that several recurring expenses—including Wi-Fi, an RO water purifier, refrigerator and washing machine instalments, electricity bills and house help charges—were yet to be paid.
She said she had already stopped hiring a cook and now prepares her own meals to cut costs, but added that Bengaluru continues to be an expensive city to live in.
The content creator also shared that relatives had encouraged her to buy a home in Bengaluru because of its employment opportunities, but she said property prices were far beyond her budget.
Internet divided over spending habits
The video drew mixed reactions online. While many users agreed that Bengaluru’s living costs have risen sharply, others argued that lifestyle choices and discretionary spending were equally responsible for higher monthly expenses.
