Bengaluru: A case of road rage was reported from the Mahadevapura area, where a Zepto delivery rider was allegedly assaulted by two scooty riders following a minor collision on the road. The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, has drawn sharp reactions, prompting police to take suo motu action against the attackers.

According to accounts shared online, what began as a small traffic-related incident quickly escalated into violence. The delivery executive, who was riding a two-wheeler while on duty, was reportedly confronted by two scooty riders after a minor collision. Instead of resolving the matter amicably or seeking assistance from traffic authorities, the situation allegedly turned aggressive within minutes.

Assault captured on video

Videos circulating on social media, which could not be independently verified, show the delivery rider being repeatedly struck with a helmet and punched by the attackers. In one particularly disturbing moment, a blow to his chest caused the rider to collapse onto the road. The visuals sparked widespread outrage, with many users condemning the attackers’ behaviour and expressing concern for the safety of delivery personnel.

A social media post accompanying the video stated that the rider, who was “simply trying to earn a living,” was left helpless and vulnerable in the middle of the road. The post further noted that the incident underscored how quickly minor disputes can spiral into violent confrontations due to unchecked anger and road rage.

Bystander intervenes

Amid the assault, another biker passing by the spot was seen intervening and confronting the attackers. The individual reportedly stepped in to shield the delivery executive and de-escalate the situation. Social media users praised the bystander’s timely intervention, noting that it may have prevented further harm to the rider.

Such interventions, however, remain rare, with many incidents of road rage often unfolding without immediate help from passersby.

Police take suo motu action

After the video gained traction on X, Mahadevapura police under the Whitefield division took suo motu cognisance of the incident. According to a report by The Times of India, action has been initiated against the attackers based on the video evidence and preliminary inquiries.

Police officials have not yet released detailed information about the identities of the accused or the specific charges invoked. However, sources indicated that the matter is being investigated seriously, given the violent nature of the assault and the public outrage it triggered.

Growing concern over road rage

The incident has once again highlighted the growing menace of road rage in urban areas, where congested traffic, stress, and lack of patience often result in aggressive behaviour. Delivery workers, in particular, are increasingly vulnerable as they spend long hours on the road under pressure to meet tight timelines.

“This incident highlights a serious problem of unchecked road rage, where minor accidents turn into violent confrontations within seconds,” the social media post accompanying the video noted. Several users echoed this sentiment, calling for stricter enforcement of laws and greater public awareness to curb such behaviour.

No response from company yet

As of the filing of this report, Zepto had not issued any official statement regarding the incident or the condition of its delivery executive. Calls on social media have urged the company to extend support to the rider and work with authorities to ensure accountability.

Conclusion

The assault on the Zepto delivery rider has reignited discussions around road safety, public conduct, and the protection of gig economy workers. While police action offers some reassurance, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how everyday disputes can turn dangerous without restraint or empathy. Citizens and authorities alike are being urged to address the deeper issue of road rage through enforcement, awareness, and accountability.
