Quick commerce app Zepto is preparing to move its headquarters from Powai, Mumbai, to Sarjapur, Bengaluru, as reported by Moneycontrol. This strategic relocation is intended to streamline operations and leverage Bengaluru’s growing reputation as India’s tech hub.
Current Operations and Relocation Plans
At present, Zepto operates its business functions from Mumbai while managing its tech and product teams in Bengaluru. The company aims to consolidate all its 1,700 to 1,800 employees under a single roof by relocating its headquarters. Employees are expected to complete the move by the end of November or early December. According to an employee, the company will cover the relocation expenses, which are estimated to be between ₹3 to 4 crore.
Financial Implications and Property Search
Despite the substantial cost of relocation, Zepto anticipates saving approximately ₹40 to 50 lakh per month in rent by moving from Mumbai to Bengaluru. The company is currently in the final stages of securing a large property in the Sarjapur, HSR, or Bellandur areas of Bengaluru for its new headquarters.
Employee Relocation and Adaptation
Of Zepto’s total workforce, about 1,000 employees are based in Mumbai, 400 in Bengaluru, and 300 in other locations. The company has reported that around 90 percent of its Mumbai-based employees are willing to relocate, with only a small fraction potentially unable to make the move. Zepto plans to manage the transition smoothly, ensuring that employees who relocate have their expenses covered.
Impact on Talent Acquisition and Industry Trends
Zepto is optimistic that its relocation will not only enhance operational efficiency but also boost its talent acquisition efforts in Bengaluru. The city has become a significant hub for tech talent, with many notable entrepreneurs such as Bhavish Aggarwal of Ola, Gaurav Munjal of Unacademy, Kunal Shah of CRED, and Jitendra Gupta of Jupiter having relocated from Mumbai in recent years.
This move underscores Zepto’s commitment to scaling its operations and solidifying its position in the competitive tech landscape of Bengaluru.
