The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is fast-tracking its large-scale tree census to meticulously document the city’s green cover. So far, nearly 3 lakh trees have been cataloged, with public feedback being sought to enhance accuracy and transparency.
Aiming to map over 18 lakh trees, the initiative is powered by a digital Tree Census Dashboard (https://kgis.ksrsac.in/test). This platform offers detailed insights into each tree’s species, location, health, and photos. Residents can explore tree data by ward, review the numbering, and submit feedback or objections via a comment box or email at [email protected].
To address concerns about identification errors, BBMP has ensured supervision by botanists, with multiple rounds of data verification before finalizing records. According to officials, this collaborative approach enables residents to actively participate in preserving Bengaluru’s greenery.
Although approximately 25,000 trees are being counted daily, delays persist in Mahadevapura, Dasarahalli, and Yelahanka zones due to contractor inefficiencies. While tenders were initially considered for cancellation, improved workforce deployment is prompting the civic body to reassess its strategy.
As one of the largest urban tree documentation projects, the census will be pivotal for city planning and ecological conservation. By engaging citizens, BBMP aims to make the process inclusive and transparent, tackling the growing concerns of Bengaluru’s vanishing green spaces.
The final database will serve as a critical resource for balancing development with environmental sustainability.
