Udupi: A case has been registered at the Kaup police station after a video showing students and other passengers dangerously hanging from the footboard of a private bus while travelling went viral on social media.

The incident reportedly took place on August 14, when a private express bus was travelling from Kaup towards Udupi. Authorities found that the bus was allegedly carrying passengers beyond the permitted capacity, in violation of the conditions of its permit.

The incident has raised serious concerns over passenger safety and the enforcement of regulations governing private buses, particularly during periods when students and other commuters depend heavily on public transport.

Passengers seen hanging from footboard

The video circulating on social media reportedly shows several passengers, including students, travelling in an extremely dangerous manner by hanging from the footboard of the moving bus.

Such travel poses a serious risk to passengers, as those standing on or near the footboard can lose their balance and fall onto the road. The danger is particularly high when buses are travelling at speed, negotiating turns or passing through busy stretches.

The presence of students among those travelling in this manner has further highlighted concerns about safe transportation for school and college-going passengers.

Authorities have taken note of the video and initiated action following the incident.

Bus allegedly carrying passengers beyond permitted capacity

According to the complaint, the private express bus was found to be carrying passengers beyond the capacity permitted under its operating conditions.

The driver and conductor have been accused of violating the conditions attached to the bus permit by allowing additional passengers to travel.

Overloading can create multiple safety concerns. Apart from making it difficult for passengers to travel comfortably, excessive occupancy can obstruct exits and make emergency evacuation more difficult.

In the reported incident, the alleged overloading was accompanied by passengers travelling on the footboard, further increasing the potential danger.

Suo motu case registered

Following the incident, a suo motu case was registered at Kaup police station.

The case alleges that the bus was being operated recklessly and negligently, with disregard for passenger safety and in a manner that could endanger human lives.

A suo motu case means the police have initiated proceedings based on information available to them rather than waiting for a specific individual to approach the police with a complaint.

In this instance, the viral video appears to have drawn attention to the alleged violations and prompted police action.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the journey and determine the exact nature of the violations.

Passenger safety comes under scrutiny

The incident has once again brought the issue of passenger safety on private buses into focus.

Private buses play an important role in connecting towns and villages across the coastal region, carrying students, workers and other daily commuters. However, operators are required to comply with permit conditions and ensure that passengers can travel safely.

Allowing passengers to travel on footboards or permitting occupancy beyond authorised limits can put both passengers and other road users at risk.

The incident also highlights the importance of enforcement by transport authorities and police. Regular checks can help identify buses violating capacity restrictions or other safety requirements before such practices result in accidents.

Viral video prompts action

The circulation of the video on social media brought wider attention to the incident. Videos showing dangerous passenger behaviour can quickly reach large audiences and often prompt authorities to investigate potential violations.

In this case, the footage reportedly showed the unsafe manner in which passengers were travelling, including students hanging from the bus footboard.

While passengers also have a responsibility to avoid dangerous travel practices, bus operators and crew members have an important role in ensuring that unsafe practices are not permitted.

The driver and conductor are expected to ensure that the vehicle is operated in accordance with permit conditions and that passengers are not placed in situations that could threaten their safety.

Investigation to determine further action

The police case will now determine the circumstances under which the passengers were allowed to travel beyond the permitted capacity and on the footboard.

Authorities are likely to examine the bus permit, passenger capacity, the circumstances of the journey and the conduct of the driver and conductor.

The incident serves as a reminder that public transport safety depends on compliance with basic regulations and responsible behaviour by both operators and passengers.

With students among those seen travelling dangerously, the episode has also raised concerns about the safety of young commuters who rely on private buses for daily travel.

The case registered at Kaup police station is expected to establish responsibility for the alleged violations and determine further action under the applicable laws.
