More than five years after the issue was first flagged, trucks from Kerala continue to illegally transport solid waste, including toxic materials like animal and biomedical waste, into Karnataka. The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has once again raised the matter with its Kerala counterpart after six trucks were seized near Gundlupet on Monday. These trucks were carrying tonnes of plastic and other non-biodegradable waste without the necessary permits or documentation.
This issue gained attention in 2019 when Mysuru City Corporation officials intercepted trucks dumping waste near the city. Despite continued seizures, the illegal transportation persists. Activists have raised concerns about the environmental impact, particularly in areas like Bandipur and BRT tiger reserves, where the waste poses a threat to wildlife. KSPCB officials are calling for joint patrolling at the checkposts and better enforcement to curb these violations.
