Mysuru: In a bold and proactive effort to tackle the pressing issue of plastic pollution, over 500 students from Purna Chetana School on HD Kote Road made a significant impact on Tuesday by visiting the city’s market areas known for selling banned single-use plastics. These young environmentalists interacted with traders and consumers, highlighting the adverse effects of such products and advocating for eco-friendly alternatives.
This initiative is part of a larger world record attempt scheduled for 11 AM on July 28, 2024. The students aim to create 1,500 eco-friendly eco-bricks in just two hours using one-liter water bottles. Additionally, they plan to fill 10,000 grow bags with seeds provided by the forest department. The goal of these endeavors is to reclaim Mysuru’s title as the cleanest city in the country by promoting awareness about maintaining a clean and green environment.
During their interactions, students from LKG to Class X discussed the environmental challenges posed by single-use plastics, including improperly disposed water bottles. They educated consumers, particularly those from rural areas, about switching to sustainable alternatives.
Voices of the Students
Dhitha S Patel, a Class IX student, emphasized the importance of collective action in combating plastic waste: “The biggest challenge in front of society is involving everyone in humanity’s fight against plastic waste. Many people are unaware of the ill effects of plastic and how to dispose of it properly. Educating the public about this issue is the need of the hour,” she said.
Expanding the Campaign
Darshan Raj, CEO of Purna Chetana School, explained that both the eco-brick and grow bag initiatives will continue as ongoing campaigns in the days to come. “We are joining hands with neighboring government schools to further expand these initiatives. It is the responsibility of everyone to keep our environment plastic-free. We are trying to sensitize our young students, irrespective of their schools,” he stated.
