Karwar: In almost all Taluks of the District, red stone mining is being done without obtaining the permission of the Department of Mines and Geology. However, it has been alleged that the officials are letting those who have the influence of politicians function without taking any action against them.

Two years ago, the Indian Bureau of Mines had ordered for no redstone extraction in areas where the aluminum content was above 20 percent. In order to level the land for agricultural activities in the Malki farm, it was ordered that the red stone should be removed after obtaining permission from the Department of Mines and Geology. But in almost all the Taluks of the District, red stone extraction is going on unabated without obtaining permit.

Former Zilla Panchayat Member Chandrappa Channaiah alleged that the authorities are only targeting a few people.
