Karwar: Measures to be taken to prevent rabies in District

Karwar: Additional Deputy Commissioner Raju Mogaveera told the officials that to prevent rabies in the District, they should go to rural areas and make school children aware about it and if cases are found, health officials should take appropriate action.

He was presiding over the Inter-State Coordinating Committee meeting on rabies held on Thursday September 22 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office hall.

Karwar District Surveyor Archana Naika said that 6533 cases of dog bites and 349 bites by other animals have been registered in the District since January till now. No cases of rabies were found. Also, any animal bite should be treated in a hospital, she said.

Stating that although rabies is deadly, it is not a disease to be feared, he said and added that it can be prevented if treated immediately.

Under Mission Rabies, 68 schools of Karwar taluyk have already been visited and the children have been made aware about it, and they will also visit other schools and recruit teachers who want to do social work to create awareness about this. He also directed the officers to make proper plans and visit rural areas and inform the public.

In the meeting, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Sharad Naik, Dr. Lalitha Shetty, Karwara DLO Shankar Rao, Karwara DDPI Ishwara Naika and other officers and staff were present.
