Karwar: The prohibition of consuming or selling addictive substances, such as alcohol and tobacco, within school premises and the surrounding area, mandated by government law, holds significant importance within the legal framework. The government’s legislation, known as the “Niyamavali,” should not remain confined to mere words on paper, nor should it be used as a tool that disproportionately affects the less privileged. A uniform law should equally apply to all citizens of the country.

However, the well-known government-operated primary school in Bajgoli presents a contradictory history. Numerous individuals who have walked through its educational corridors have achieved success both nationally and internationally, contributing significantly to the nation’s reputation. In close proximity to Bajgoli, a newly constructed building is set to house a Bar & Restaurant, seemingly approved by the government.

Despite this history, the department granted permission for this establishment. Against this backdrop, students who have benefited from education informed town residents, and educators are all engaged in protesting against the department’s actions, questioning the path it has taken.

According to available information, those opposing the decision to allow a Bar & Restaurant near the educational institution have already organized a gathering and prepared a memorandum. On August 15th, they placed a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, the nation’s father, in front of the school. Students held placards and formed a human chain to express their dissent.
