Mangaluru: The new leader of the opposition in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), AC Vinayaraj said that the opposition will always support the good causes put forth by the MCC. He said the oppositions job is not to oppose all the plans made by the corporation but rather to point out the wrong doings of the ruling body.

“We will keep check on whether the corporation is carrying out their duties and will make sure that there is no corruption or wastage of governments’ money,” said Vinayaraj.

Speaking to News Karnataka about his new position, he said, “my party has recognised my service and ability and I will make sure that they work towards the best of my abilities.”

While mentioning about the satisfaction of the people with regard to the workings of the current ruling body, Vinayaraj said that the citizens are feeling burdened with the way MCC is increasing the taxes. “Due to the pandemic, the people are financially constrained and on top of that MCC has increased water bill and property taxes,“ he complained. Even though we had brought this issue to their notice, no measures have been taken so far.

Vinayaraj stressed on the important of creating more job opportunities in the city. “In 2016, with the collective effort of MCC which was ruled by our party, we made sure that there was development in fisheries and port which increased the export and import business, ultimately creating more opportunities,“ he stated. He stated that the current ruling body is not doing any such work to increase employment opportunities for the youth and as a result, people are moving away from Mangaluru city.

“We had suggested to develop the water front to promote tourism in the city but the corporation is only bothered about rainwater, drainage and laying concrete on roads,” he opined.

Speaking about the actions taken by MCC during the pandemic, Vinayaraj said that it was a ‘total mismanagement’ from the part of MCC and that they did not make use of the officials. “The MLAs and MPs are not used to giving instructions in such conditions and hence an expert committee should have been made by the corporation to give out the specific directions needed to be followed,” he said.

He argued that the BJP party lied to the people that the ration kits that was given to the citizens of the city were from their own pockets when in fact it was given out by the Labour department of the government.

He stated that in this new position he will deliver his best to make sure that the corporation meets the needs of the citizens in the city.
