Moodbidri: After a successful three day cultural fest, ‘Alvas Nudisiri – 2016’ closed it’s curtains on Sunday, November 20. The valedictory of the 13th literary conference and cultural festival was conducted at the Vidyagiri campus of Alva’s college in Moodbidri on a grand note.

Addressing the gathering of thousands and delivering the valedictory speech, Kannada literature critic Giraddi Govindaraj mentioned how the democratic system was being ruined by extremists. “The extreme right and left wings are posing a danger to the democratic system of India and it is more advisable to stay away from these ideologies. The division on thoughts of leftists and rightists has always done harm to the society as they back their ideologies even if something about it is wrong”, he said.

Congratulating the efforts of Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr. M Mohan Alva in bringing Kannada litterateurs together for a common good, Govindaraj said, “In the recent days, literature has taken a backseat due to many reasons. For 13 years he has been taking the selfless responsibility of organizing this cultural fest despite facing hardships. The effort made by Dr. Mohan Alva in uniting the literary geniuses in such a fest is truly appreciable”, he added.

The valedictory ceremony was marked by the honouring of 13 Kannada cultural arts and literature experts. Giraddi Govindaraj (Literature), Chennanna Valikara (Literature), G N Ranganath Rao (Media), Harini (Film), Sheenappa Rai Sampaje (Yakshagaana), H R Leelavathi (Classical Music), G Jnanananda (Architecture), Subraya Chokkadi (Literature), K R Sandhya Reddy (Research), K V Akshara (Theatre), Srinivasa G Kappanna (Organizing), Jabbar Samo (Yakshagaana) and Chandrashekhar Chouta (Agriculture) were awarded for their contribution in their respective fields.

The 13 achievers were each honored with a cash prize of Rs. 25 thousand, a memento and a citation. Each of them got a traditional aarth and kumkum honor as well in the presence of MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and MLA Abhayachandra Jain.

Rain water harvesting is the future, Yettinahole is not: IISC head scientist

Earlier in the day, a gathering of scientific experts addressed the gathering about key issues that concern the environmental stability of Karnataka. Head of Indian Institute of Science Centre for Ecological Sciences, Energy and Wetland Research Group Dr. T V Ramachandra and Organic farmer Nadoja L Varthur Narayana Reddy spoke to the gathering regarding the same topics.

Taking up a session on environment at Ratnakara Vedike on the third day of Alva’s Nusidiri 2016, Dr. Ramachandra considered the example of Yettinahole Project to be a poorly planned development project which can hamper the future generations. “According to surveys and studies on the project, scientists have trashed the claims of the government about lifting 24 TMC of water from Yettinahole. The ground reality is that not even a drop of water can be taken from there due to the lack of water. The government still wants to go ahead with the project which will mean impending danger to the coast and hills”, he said.

Suggesting rain water harvesting as the best alternative to Yettinahole project, Dr. Ramachandra said, “If Kolar district stored rain water, it could have 130 TMC available water as against the 60 TMC requirement. Instead of spending Rs. 13,000 crore on Yettinahole project, the government can desilt all  the 2,400 water tanks in the district at the cost of Rs. 2000 crore”, he suggested.

Speaking on the same occasion about organic farming a safer alternative to chemical farming, Nadoja Varthur Narayana Reddy said, “Organic farming is the best way to grow crops since chemical farming can induce more chemicals on our plates directly or indirectly. Farmers should be advised about choosing organic farming more often than chemical farming.”
