Mangaluru: One of the major Konkani speaking districts is hosting a three-day culture, education, literature, music and art festival in February under the aegis of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy. Mangaluru’s Town Hall will be home to “Konkani Lokotsava” which will focus on all the aspects related to developing Konkani as a language spoken by three religions and 41 communities.
Starting on 10 February 2017, Konkani Lokotsava will feature a series of events around the Town Hall till February 12. Konkani culture and traditions will be played at various locations along with a Konkani food festival. Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy has taken the lead in this regard to bring Konkani culture to light and provide opportunities for participants to portray their skills in Konkani cuisine, literature and music.
On the first day of the fest, women and children belonging to various Konkani communities will be highlighting their talents in literary and cultural events. The second day will focus on the youth who are learning Konkani in school and college levels. There will be grander celebrations on the closing day with book releases, Academy honorary awards, youth awards, felicitations of achievers and various seminars before the valedictory ceremony.
Folk dances by Siddi, Kudmi, Karvi, Huluswara and other tribal communities will be played often at the venue. On February 11 (Second day), a procession exhibiting a variety of dance, songs, instrumental music and other art forms will start at 5 pm from Balmatta ground and head for Town Hall.
