67th Republic Day celebrated amid protest against Yettinahole project

Mangaluru: The 67th Republic Day celebrations were held at Nehru Maidan here on Tuesday January 26, amid protests from various forums opposing the Yettinahole project.

The programme commenced with District In-Charge Minister Ramanath Rai hoisting the tricolour flag after receiving the guard of honour.

In his public address, Rai gave a call to maintain peace and harmony in the society and give up fights in the name of religion.

Reading out the State government’s achievements, Rai said that the government has released an additional Rs 35 cr as per the court order, to compensate the ones who lost their land for the development of the Mangalore Airport in the first phase. He further said that a memorandum has been submitted to the government to extend the airport runway.

Speaking with regard to providing housing facilities to the poor, Rai said that the process of choosing 2502 beneficiaries in the district under the Dr BR Ambedkar Housing Scheme is in progress. He said that as many as 4,700 beneficiaries have been picked for housing under Basava Vasathi scheme and 1,565 houses currently being built.

Rai said that DK leads the state in empowering women. “The State government has sanctioned Rs 3.83cr to be distributed among 3,663 Stri Shakti groups”, he added.

The Minister informed that that 30 villages under Podi Mukthi Abhiyana were identified in the first phase and the survey of land in these villages has been completed. The drive was launched in view of ensuring that farmers have all documents of their land. Rai added that another 30 villages have already been identified in the second phase.

He informed that the Mangaluru City Corporation is intending to build toilets for all in its purview and declare Mangaluru as a ‘no open defecation’ city by the year end.

Government employees honoured

An attractive parade by the police force, NCC, NSS and Bharat Seva Dal volunteers from different schools and colleges in the city followed.

‘Sarvotthama Seva Prashasti’ constituted by the district administration was conferred on six government employees for their exceptional service. They are P Sridhar from Forest Department, SP Office Dean Ravichandra A, B Hyder Ali and Prabhakar employed at the DC Office, Manjula from Zilla Panchayat and Ramesh working at the Horticulture Department.

Protestors detained

On the other hand, protestors opposing the Yettinahole project, Dinesh Holla and Sudatta Jain Shirthady among others were detained by the police.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Mangaluru South MLA JR Lobo, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhar, SP Dr Sharanappa, DC AB Ibrahim and ZP CEO Srividya were present among others.
