Mangaluru: Pompei College, at Aikala, about 30 kilometres from the City, has now asked students to attend college only in the prescribed uniform. This move of the college comes after students insisted on wearing saffron shawls after students from another community sported hijab to the college.
According to sources, at the co-ordination committee meeting held on Thursday January 6, it was unanimously decided that neither headscarves (hijab) nor saffron shawls will be allowed in the campus henceforth. The meeting had in attendance the representative of Joint Director’s office, Police Department, representatives of both the communities, old students apart from the members of the governing council.
The decision came ater about 34 students came sporting saffron shawls without intimating the college principal as the Muslim students had been wearing headscarves inside the classroom since five years with no objection raised to it.
