During the Mangalore Press Club Guest of Honour programme, M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation in Moodbidri, shared insights into the institution’s commitment to holistic education. With approximately 25,000 students enrolled, including 20,000 residing in hostels, Alva emphasized the foundation’s dedication to nurturing not only academic excellence but also personal growth.
Reflecting on his own life journey, Alva highlighted the profound impact of hostel life on his upbringing. Having spent nearly two decades in various hostels during his educational journey, he stressed the invaluable lessons learned beyond academics. Exposure to diverse cultures and religions in hostel environments, from Jain seers to Catholic priests, instilled in him a deep sense of respect and understanding.
Despite being an average academic performer, Alva’s passion for sports and extracurricular activities was evident. Transitioning from his beginnings as an ayurvedic doctor, he ventured into establishing a multi-speciality hospital and nursing college, all financed through loans. Despite the substantial loan burden of Rs 250 crore, Alva remains dedicated to repayment, citing it as a source of motivation and responsibility.
Looking ahead, Alva outlined plans for revamping Nudisiri, a literary and cultural event celebrating Kannada heritage, while reaffirming the continuation of the national cultural festival. Through these initiatives, Alva’s Education Foundation continues its mission to foster holistic development among its students.
