Cheating case: Former bank employee sentenced to 4-yr-imprisonment

Mangaluru: The City’s First Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a person, who was a bank employee and has cheated another woman of Rs. 5 lakh with four years of imprisonment and penalty upto Rs.15,000.Judge T. P. Ramalingegowda prounounced the judgement.

Grace Fernandes is the accused who cheated a school teacher Teresa D’Souza. Fernandes had not only cheated Teresa of over Rs.5 lakh that she intended to keep as fixed deposit in the bank in which Fernandes was employee but also gave a lifethreat to Teresa conniving along with her husband.

In this regard a case was registered at North Police Station and the police department had filed chargesheet in the court on March 14, 2011. However, the accused were exonerated by the court. Soon an appeal was made at First Additional District and Sessions Court challenging the judgement of the lower court.

The accused has been sentenced to two years of imprisonment for stealing the documents from the bank and Rs. 2000 as penalty on failure of which accused has been asked to go for 2 months of imprisonment. Further, one-year imprisonment for creating forged documents and Rs.1000 and as penalty on failure of which accused has been asked to go for one month of imprisonment. Thus, the accused has been overall given the said punishment for making the customer believe that the forged documents are genuine documents.

The court has also ordered to pay Rs.10,000 as compensation to Teresa.
