Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress, in collaboration with the Mulky-Moodbidiri Block Congress, held a torchlight protest rally on Wednesday, November 18, from the Circuit House to Kenjar, near the Mangaluru International Airport. During the protest, the agitators raised their voices against the privatization of the MIA and its being handed over to the Adani Group.

Addressing the participants, former state minister Ramanath Rai said, “All the good companies that the Congress started and which employed thousands of people, are being sold off to private parties by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government. During the Congress’ rule, many development projects were taken up and completed, and the BJP is now taking credit for them.”

The Mangaluru International Airport, which was formerly known as Bajpe Airport, was started by a son of the soil, U S Mallya, with the support of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, who inaugurated it on December 25, 1951, Rai stated.

“Modi and his BJP party had made many promises, but none of them has materialized. This makes the Modi government a ‘jhoot BJP’-run government. We will continue our fight until the airport is renamed Koti-Chennayya Airport. This is just the beginning, the real fight is yet to come, Rai added.

Speaking before the start of the rally, District Youth Congress President Mithun Rai accused the BJP government of stealing the development works of the Congress by privatizing them. “It looks like the BJP has no concern for the Dakshina Kannada district, and acts as a puppet of investors. Let them rename MIA after Koti Chennaya or U S Mallya and not Adani. Renaming MIA after someone hailing from Gujarat is not right. We condemn this decision of the Union Government. We will continue to fight till Adani’s name is taken off the airport sign,” he said.

He then requested the current airport terminal manager to hire locals instead of people from Gujarat.

Former minister Abhaya Chandra Jain, DK Mahila Congress president Shalet Pinto, Corporators Naveen Chandra Alva, A-C Vinayaraj, and many other Congress leaders were present.
