Despite efforts to replenish water levels, the Thumbay vented dam, a critical water source for Mangaluru city, has witnessed a steady decline over the past week, raising concerns among officials and residents alike.
Thumbay Dam Water Levels:
The water level at the dam dropped from 5.69 meters on Friday to 5.56 meters by Monday, despite continuous pumping from the Harekala dam. Factors such as increased evaporation due to summer heat, unauthorized usage for local farming, and sediment accumulation have contributed to this decline.
AMR Dam Situation:
Similarly, the AMR dam, serving as a backup for Thumbay, has also experienced a reduction in water levels. From 17.98 meters on March 20, it decreased to 17.74 meters by Monday.
Impact on Industrial Water Supply:
The diminishing water levels raise concerns about potential disruptions to industrial water supply, with industries currently receiving 18 million gallons per day (MGD) out of the total supply. A shortage of drinking water could lead to utilizing water from the AMR dam, potentially halting industrial supply.
MCC’s Response:
In response to the situation, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has set up a control room and initiated the supply of tanker water to areas facing scarcity. Residents can contact the MCC for assistance.
Assurance from Mayor Sudhir Shetty Kannur:
Mayor Sudhir Shetty Kannur reassured citizens that despite the decline, efforts are underway to maintain water levels in the Thumbay dam, including continuous pumping and round-the-clock monitoring.
