Mangaluru: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a cautionary advisory regarding anticipated high temperatures and potential heat waves spanning from March through May. In response, the Dakshina Kannada (DK) Disaster Management Authority has issued guidelines for public safety.
The authority emphasized the potential health risks associated with heat waves and advised the public to take precautionary measures. Recommendations include carrying an umbrella when outdoors, seeking shade in cool areas, wearing loose and breathable cotton clothing, and using light-colored fabrics to deflect heat.
Special consideration is given to vulnerable groups such as senior citizens and children, who are urged to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and buttermilk. Outdoor activities are advised against during the peak hours of 11 am to 4 pm, and individuals are encouraged to wear cotton or turban hats for added protection. Adequate ventilation within homes is also recommended.
In the event of heat stroke, immediate measures such as moving the affected person to a cooler environment and administering a sponge bath with cold water are advised. If symptoms persist, seeking medical attention equipped with cooling facilities is recommended.
Employers are urged to provide mandatory rest periods for outdoor laborers, while dietary recommendations include increasing intake of Vitamin C through lime juice and substituting sugar with jaggery. Additionally, consuming a mixture of Tulsi leaves with water in the morning is suggested to alleviate fatigue.
Spicy foods are to be avoided, and cold water baths are recommended for cooling down. For children under the age of five, regular administration of iodine salt water every half an hour is advised for hydration and electrolyte balance.
