Mangaluru: A search for a bride turned to be costly for this Mangaluru man, who virtually ended by losing over Rs 11 lakhs.
The victim, who hails from Mulky had reportedly uploaded his details on a Kannada matrimonial website.
Around four months ago he received a whatsapp message from a British national Stella Morris, who evinced interest in marrying him. The lady convinced him to relocate to England assuring him of being able to secure him a nice job. She gave him the contact details of a person called Michel Antony who would help him with the Visa process.
On contacting Michel the victim was asked to transfer money around Rs 26,650 for Visa application and other works which he duly did via a NEFT transaction through a nationalized bank at Kinnigoli village. Later he coughed up a further sum of Rs 83000 for for Anti-Terrorist Certificate application and other related works and was in touch with Antony and another person named James Beven. In total the trio managed to secure a little over Rs 11 lakhs from the victim citing visa and other-related expenses.
It was only a month ago when he went to Delhi for the visa that he found the phone numbers of the persons switched off and realised on him that he had been taken for a ride.
A case has been registered with the cyber police.
