In anticipation of the upcoming elections, officials from the excise department in Dakshina Kannada have intensified raids to combat the illegal supply of liquor, often used to influence voters. Over a period of fewer than five days, authorities have confiscated approximately 446 litres of liquor, including 25 litres of Goa-made liquor and 15 litres of beer.

Seizures and Impoundments

In addition to the liquor confiscations, five two-wheelers employed for the illegal transportation of alcohol have been impounded. TM Srinivas, deputy commissioner of the excise department in Dakshina Kannada, emphasized the ongoing efforts to monitor and curb the illicit liquor trade since the implementation of the model code of conduct in the district. The total value of the seized liquor and vehicles is estimated to be around Rs 6.03 lakh.

Enforcement Efforts

Excise department sources revealed that officials have conducted raids at 73 locations thus far. Notably, the south constituency has witnessed the highest seizure of liquor, amounting to 203 litres. This is followed by Mangaluru, Bantwal, Belthangady, and Moodbidri constituencies, indicating a widespread enforcement effort across the district.

The proactive measures undertaken by the excise department underscore the commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process, free from the undue influence of illegal activities such as the distribution of alcohol.
