Mangaluru: The Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH), in its mission to provide healthcare service to its people, has opened a sub-centre of the FMMCH-RHTC at the Porkodi Samudaya Bhavan, Ambedkar Bhavan of the Malavoor Grama Panchayat. The new sub-centre was inaugurated on November 6.
The sub-centre has been a need in the region as a large number of the population is aged.
Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, Rev. Fr Richard A. Coelho and Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes, Administrator FMMC were the chief guests of the inaugural programme.
Welcoming the gathering, PDO Venkatramana Prakash thanked the Institution for taking a step to provide healthcare for the residents.
Rev. Fr Richard spoke on the essentiality of health in the overall wellness of life. Dr Jessy Maria D’Souza RMO, FMCH-RHTC, briefed the audience regarding the importance of health in various stages in life. Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes explained the availability of the facilities of sub-centre, Bajpe FMCH-RHTC centre and Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru.
Ganesh Arbhi, president of the Malavoor Gram Panchayat, during his presidential address, highlighted the works of the panchayat in providing an overall development for its population.
This once-a-week (Tuesday’s) centre, 4.5 km distance from the Father Muller Salvadore Monteiro Rural Health Training Center in Bajpe’s Porkodi, was set up due to the need for primary health care. With a population of 6000, who are mostly aged, the sub-centre provides primary care and first aid with referrals to the FMCH-RHTC centre and Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru. Basic checks like blood pressure, blood glucose and primary check-up are provided with medicines. A team of doctors and allied health staff will be deputed at the centre for this purpose.
The setting up of the centre will also initiate public awareness campaigns by the students and health workers of the Bajpe centre in personal hygiene, garbage disposal, infant health care and environmental health.

Dr Sourabh Kumar, Assistant Professor Community Medicine, Sr Jacintha, principal, Father Muller College of Nursing, Vice President Vanaja B Shetty (Malavoor GP) and Mahila Mandal president Nalini G Shetty were also present.
