In the Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency, a new electoral battle is brewing as fresh candidates enter the political arena. Captain Brijesh Chowta, representing the BJP, has been actively campaigning across the region, while the Congress has nominated R Padmaraj, KPCC general secretary, as its candidate.
Strategic Nomination by Congress
Padmaraj’s selection by the Congress is seen as a strategic move aimed at garnering support from the Billava voters. Hailing from Baloor in Chikkamagaluru district, Padmaraj is the son of HM Ramayya and Lalitha. He holds a law degree from SDM College, Mangaluru, and has gained experience working under former Union minister B Janardhana Poojary. Additionally, he is the founder president of Guru Beladingalu Foundation, actively involved in social work and closely associated with the Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple.
Historical Context and BJP’s Dominance
The BJP, which wrested the Dakshina Kannada constituency (formerly Mangaluru constituency) from the Congress in the 1991 election, has retained the seat for eight consecutive terms. This history underscores the significance of the electoral contest in the region and the BJP’s stronghold in Dakshina Kannada.
Other Contests in the Region
Meanwhile, K Jayaprakash Hegde is set to contest from the Udupi-Chikkamagaluru constituency on a Congress ticket, adding further dynamics to the political landscape in the region. As the election season unfolds, all eyes will be on Dakshina Kannada and its neighboring constituencies to witness the outcome of these electoral battles.
