Mangaluru: A happy outing at Someshwar turned tragic after a man drowned at a pond nearby here on Wednesday, while four people who were along with him were rescued.

The deceased has been identified as Naveen Monteiro (32), a resident of Chembugudde, while the other rescued were Nithin, Sunil, Mujahideen and Rajesh.

On September 2, owing to the nation-wide strike, Naveen, the owner and driver of a tourist vehicle had an off. He along with twenty of his friends, who are also tourist vehicle drivers, played volleyball in the afternoon and later went to Someshwar beach. They then, went to a pond located at the Someshwar temple for a bath.

While everyone left after a bath, Naveen along with his friend stayed near the pond for some more time. He then slipped into deep waters and drowned, it has been reported. The four friends tired to rescue him however, but they too were pulled in.

Looking at the chaos nearby, other friends rushed to them and pulled everyone out, including Naveen. He was pulled out of the water and rushed to the hospital, but he died on the way.

Naveen was engaged to be married in April this year, his family told the media. Ullal police have registered a case.
