Mangaluru: “Before implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Union Government needs to gain the confidence of the people and make them aware of the contents of the law,” said Mangaluru Bishop Most Rev Dr Peter Paul Saldanha on Monday, December 23.
During an informal chat with the mediapersons after giving his Christmas message to the public, Saldanha said, “Awareness about CAA and NRC should be spread from the Gram Panchayat level. The people must know the exact context and implications of the Act. Let the people understand what CAA and NRC stands for.”
The Bishop also informed that a majority of the people reside in rural areas and they are all unaware about the law. “As they are clueless about the law and live in fear of the same, it is the responsibility of the government to inform them properly. The gram sabha is an ideal platform for the authorities to create awareness about the Act and its usefulness to society,” he said.
