Mangaluru: Two more students from a private college in Kundapur  have filed a petition with the Karnataka High Court, seeking permission to wear the hijab.

The college Principal, Mangalore University Registrar, and Kundapur MLA Halady Srinivas Shetty are named as defendants in the petition filed by two students from Bhandarkar’s Arts and Science college. The students claim in their petition that the college has restricted them from entering the campus because they wear ‘hijabs’.

BBA students Suha Maulana and Aisha Aleefa, have submitted the petition.

The girls claimed in their petition that there was no dispute about hijabs when they applied for college. On February 3, the principal suddenly imposed the restriction, citing a government order prohibiting hijabs in the classroom.

According to the petition, when the girls’ parents confronted the principal about the decision, he told them that it was made on the orders of the MLA, who is the President of the college development committee.
