Mangaluru: Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), Mangaluru diocese held a bike rally to bring awareness on road safety to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, from Rosario Cathedral to Jeppu Seminary on Sunday, October 2.
Mangaluru’s famous traffic warden Joe Gonsalves flagged of the rally from Rosario Cathedral.
Chief Whip of Karnataka Legislative Assembly Ivan D’Souza who spoke on the occasion stressed on the need of taking care while riding two-wheelers. “Every youth riding two-wheelers should wear helmet. It’s the only way to save oneself from severe head injuries. We need to obey traffic rules very strictly. The government is working on bringing heavy traffic rules. If a person violates traffic rules thrice, his license will be cancelled. A computerized driving school will be started in the city were license will be issued on one’s performance,” said D’Souza.
Ivan further said that ICYM members should join the Traffic Warden System and serve.
Earlier, Parish Priest of Rosario Cathedral Fr J B Crasta led prayers. A one-minute silent prayer was offered for the 18 brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the Uri attack.
The rally culminated at Olivet house, Jeppu where the 70th Jubilee year of ICYM was inaugurated by Vicar General of Diocese of Mangaluru, Msgr. Dennis Moras Prabhu. He called all the youth to organise creative programmes during the jubilee year celebrations.
As many as 57 units who had participated in the recently held Clean and Green Mangaluru project were honoured during the programme. Also, a special edition of Amcho Yuvak magazine was released.
