Mangaluru: In a bid to conserve the beautiful heritage of Mangalore, St Aloysius College has joined hands with INTACH Conservation Institutes (ICI) to restore the paintings of St Aloysius College.
In a press release, ICI Principal Director Nilabh Sinha informed that the restoration work, which will take around 18 months to complete, will extend the life of these painting by another 25 years.
He also said that the scientific conservation project will be carried out to remove the dust and soot settled on the paintings, redo the previous unscientific restoration, and treat any damages on the paintings.
St Aloysius Chapel Paintings were painted by Italian Jesuit Antonio Moscheni in 1899. The paintings adorn the walls and ceiling of the chapel are painted on canvas using oil paints. The sunlight, humidity, pollution in the air and dust affect these paintings and restoration work needs to be done periodically to extend their life.
The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is the largest premier non-government and non-profit organisation which focuses on preserving tangible as well as intangible cultural heritage in India.
A team from INTACH had restored the chapel paintings from 1991 to 1994. A team of experts from INTACH Conservation Institute, Delhi is currently examining and analysing the conservation treatment which was given 25 years back.
