Mangaluru: The city witnessed violence on Thursday, December 19, when protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 turned chaotic. Clashes between the police and civilians were witnessed in parts of the city and by the end of the day, two deaths were confirmed by the police. While prohibitory orders were already in place, soon, a curfew was imposed on the city and a 48-hour suspension of mobile internet services was enforced.
Police fired teargas shells and carried out a Lathi (baton) charge to disperse 100 anti-CAA protesters who allegedly turned violent, setting a few motorbikes on fire and pelting stones on security forces in Mangaluru.
The two persons Mohammed Jaleel (49) of Kanduka and Nausheen (23) of Kudroli, who died as a result of yesterday’s protests, had succumbed to bullet injuries sustained in police firing on anti-CAA protesters, a police source told IANS on Thursday.
“Jaleel Kandak (49) and Nausheen Kudroli (23), who received bullet injuries when the police fired on protesters near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, succumbed to their injuries at a private hospital,” the source said.
When Mangaluru Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha was yet to officially confirm the deaths, a Muslim cleric told reporters that Jaleel and Nausheen were no more. Senior Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao also confirmed the deaths in a tweet.
Tragic news in Mangaluru.
Two people have died in police firing and two are supposedly critically injured.
The BJP is directly responsible for breakdown of law & order.
The statements and actions of the BJP govt & its leaders is creating an unnecessary provocative environment.

Addressing the media, Harsha had said, “About 20 people were injured, including 15 policemen, when protesters threw stones on the police and attempted to set police vehicles on fire.”
