Kasargod : Shashi Tharoor, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, declared Kasargod as the second district in the nation to achieve total primary education. The declaration was made on October 6, Monday at a function held at the Government High School grounds.
Kasargod district could achieve this feat under the Vigyan Jyothi Scheme under the joint aegis of Zilla Panchayat, Kasargod and Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority The Scheme was launched in 2008 and has over 2000 instructors and volunteers who imparted education to those who could not attend regular classes. They even educated Endosulfan victims. Of the 12,610 people in the age group of 18 to 50 who appeared for the exams, 96 per cent have passed.
Shashi Tharoor said the literacy rate in India has increased to 78 per cent from the 17 per cent at the time of independence. He also stressed the need to give more importance to education of women.
PP Shyamaladevi, Kasargod Zilla Panchayat President and several others were present.
