Mangaluru: Mangaluru’s Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has submitted a memorandum to Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, urging him to develop the Mangaluru-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (MBIC) along the lines of other industrial corridors in the country.

In the letter, KCCI President Shashidhar Pai Maroor expressed his delight at the government’s approval of 11 Industrial Corridors with 32 Projects to be developed in four phases across the country as part of the National Industrial Corridor Programme (NICP), which is currently in various stages of conceptualisation, development, and implementation.

“Bengaluru is a part of the Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC – now extended to Kochi via Coimbatore), Hyderabad Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (HBIC), and Bengaluru Mumbai Industrial Corridor (BMIC) because of its strategic location and economic activity. We also note that project development operations are currently underway in Karnataka’s Tumakuru Industrial Area (on CBIC) and Dharwad Node (on BMIC),” stated the memorandum.

It further stated that, “We propose a Mangaluru-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor along similar lines (MBIC). Through National Highway 75, MBIC can connect the state’s only all-weather port (New Mangalore Port) with the state capital Bengaluru, passing through the Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, and Bengaluru Rural districts. The Shiradi Ghat Tunnel project (23.6km) and the development of world-class infrastructure along the connectivity channels in the region along the corridor crossing through various districts are already in the works.”

“In a few years, the distance between Mangaluru and Bengaluru is predicted to be covered in 5 to 6 hours.  On this route, the presence of New Mangalore Port, an all-weather deep-draft seaport with the capability and experience to handle cargo of any variety and volume, would further boost EXIM trade,” stated the memorandum.

“The Mangaluru International Airport, which offers direct flights to Gulf countries, has not yet reached its full export cargo potential. Mangaluru International Airport may export perishable goods from the hinterland. Similarly, the hinterland will benefit from Mangaluru’s railway hub, which offers frequent trains to Kerala and Maharashtra (apart from other parts of India).”

According to the letter, this proposed MBIC has enormous potential for the state’s unparalleled economic development, producing a great number of job opportunities and contributing to overall socio-economic development.

“The development of this corridor would help our Prime Minister achieve his goal of increasing exports from every district. The Corridor’s expansion would stimulate small-scale industrial activities in these districts and increase Karnataka’s export share,” it added.
