Mangaluru: With the intention of offering an all-encompassing and comprehensive service for the preservation and replacement of joints, the KMC hospital has announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind knee and hip care centre at its branch located near Dr B R Ambedkar Circle.

The centre was inaugurated by Prof Mats Brittberg from Gothenburg, Sweden, who is the originator of cartilage regeneration and has been the president of the International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society (ICRS), Prof Seuk Jung Kim from Seoul, South Korea and Professor of Orthopaedic surgeon and researcher Anantharam Shetty from Canterbury, UK, both developers of cell therapies with numerous applications and patents.

Anantharam Shetty, speaking to the media, expressed his delight at being a part of this special chapter for the city. “I believe this dedicated centre will offer a complete solution to all joint-related medical conditions. It is known that Indians have an almost 15 times higher risk of having joint issues compared to the people in the West, due to their genetic predisposition and lifestyle. This centre will offer a much needed medical support and provide world-class treatments at affordable prices,” he said.

Manipal Hospitals Chairman Dr Sudharshan Ballal said, “By providing comprehensive care for knee and hip joints under one roof, we treat the whole range of problems equally and passionately with certified state-of-the-art treatment. Whether it is new techniques of exercise-based approach, injections like platelet-rich plasma, minimally invasive Arthroscopy, a walk-in walk-out day procedure or simple and complex joint replacement surgery, our outcomes for each treatment would be on par with the best available in the world.”

Ballal also said that dedicated hip and knee care is the need of the hour considering that India is currently facing a knee ailment epidemic. “Indians are facing various knee and hip-related issues that need the right treatment and medical advice. Tremendous medical advancements have been made and innovative technology has been implemented to offer respite to the patients suffering such conditions. In fact knee and hip replacements enhance the quality of life and the longevity of patients as arthritis is moving towards becoming the 4th common cause of disability and requires specialised doctors to address the issue,” he said.

MD and CEO of Manipal Health Enterprises Dilip Jose, Regional Chief Clinical Services KMC  Dr Anand Venugopal, Regional Chief Operating Officer Saghir Siddiqui and others were present.
