Make pet licences mandatory: Animal activists

Mangaluru: Following an alarming increase in cases of abandoned pets (mostly dogs), animal activists have petitioned the government to make it mandatory for pets to have collar IDs or microchipping.

The Good Samaritans over at Animal Care Trust, are concerned about the increasing number of abandoned pets especially Labradors, Dachshunds and Dobermen. In many cases, pet owners call up the trust at the last moment to inform them that they cannot take the pet along with them as they are either moving into a flat or moving abroad or somewhere else. This becomes very taxing however, they do their best to connect people who want to give up their pets and people who want to adopt a pet.

Particular breeds are being abandoned because they develop infection of the skin or some other derma issues, which requires a lot of patience and care on the part of the owner.

According to one member of the trust, pups are adorable and hence people take them but as they grow older they are considered to be a burden and are abandoned as a result. The poor animals are then left to fend for themselves.
