Mangaluru: Renowned autorickshaw driver Monthu Lobo passed away on Saturday November 5.
He was 86 years old. From Valencia Parish, Lobo, a zealous auto driver, was an example to his colleagues. He rendered yeomen service to society. He operated his auto from Kankanady.
He was well-known for his selfless service and social work. Lobo was presented with the Sarathi No 1 award from the Indian Vehicle Drivers’ Trade Union in 2012.
He was adjudged the best driver of the year on World Drivers’ Day held at Sri Puttana Chetty Town Hall in Bengaluru.
His social works included providing water taps to areas which are in need of it, water taps to schools, hospitals, computers to schools, uniforms to needy school children, sandals, clothes and even eatables to orphanages and needy children in Mangaluru and even other far off places.
Serving as an auto driver for more than half a century, and he had not faced even a single instance of police case or accident. Recognising his unique feat he was felicitated by the RTO and the District Administration in 2008 by the then Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Rao.
He had got his driving license way back in 1957, and was one of the first auto drivers in the City to get licence.
