Mangaluru: ‘Drug case, students, doctors insulted’

Mangaluru: Students and doctors have been arrested without proper investigation in a case related to the use of banned drugs in the City. Advocate and Mangaluru Bar Association Vice-President Manoraj Rajeev and Forensic experts Dr. M. S. Mahabalesh Shetty alleged said that priority has been given to defamation of drug addicts instead of rehabilitation of drug addicts.

Speaking to media persons in City on Tuesday January 24, they said that drug addicts have been portrayed as peddlers. Students, parents, doctors have been insulted by printing their photograph and parental details. They also said that it is suspected that the law enforcement agencies have not conducted proper investigations.

They should have been sent to a rehabilitation centre if hmtgey had consumed drugs but they were kept in custody, they lamented. He also said that innocent people have been sent to custody in the case.

Clarifying that he was not opposed to taking action against drug peddlers, he said law enforcement agencies should not treat drug peddlers and drug addicts equally.

Questioning whether the drug addicts would quit the addiction if they were arrested, he pointed out that apart from the main accused, ganja was not found with any other student or doctor.
