Mangaluru: Beginning Tuesday October 11, farmers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi would receive a 2.05 per litre incentive from the Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (DKMUL). In reality, the DKMUL will pay farmers Rs. 32 per litre of milk that they supply. DKMUL is currently paying 29.05 per litre for milk.

K. P. Sucharitha Shetty, the President of DKMUL, told mediapersons that the union decided to offer the incentive to encourage farmers to produce more milk of higher quality. According to him, the 2.05 incentive will be paid for the following three months and be added to the 5 per litre incentive that the State Government plans to soon pay to the farmers.

According to Shetty, DKMUL gets milk from 68,000 farmers associated to 732 cooperative milk societies in the Districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. While daily milk procurement were previously averaging 4.65 lakh litres, they have now reached an average of 5.65 lakh litres during the past two months.

The 2.05 incentive will pay the union’s daily expenditure of 10 lakh rupees. During the union’s special meeting on October 11, the new incentive for farmers in the twin districts will be officially announced.

According to Mr. Shetty, Union produced 19 different milk products, and 5.3 lakh litres of milk needed everyday. According to him, the union decided to provide incentives so that more farmers would produce milk to the union because not all milk societies were giving it in the needed quantity.
