Mangaluru: Mayor Jayananda Anchan said that the fire that broke out at the Pachanady garbage landfill site has been completely doused.
Addressing a press conference, he said, “On January 6 at around 1.30 pm, the old garbage dump caught fire. The fire quickly took over the entire space due to the strong wind.
He further said, “It was difficult at first to reach the area due to the flames. The wind noise decreased and post that we managed to bring the fire under control with the help of 13 fire fighting teams.”
He informed that operations have been carried out to prevent the fire from spreading by using JCB, and hitachis. Further he added “We have examined the visuals recorded in the CCTV cameras in the area where the fire broke out. There are no scenes recorded in it that corroborate any human activity being responsible for this.There is a possibility that the fire was caused by gas generated from garbage,” he said.
“A team of environmental experts, State Pollution Control Board and District Disaster Management team and the dignitaries visited the spot and inspected it.
“Precautionary measures to prevent fire should be followed, he said and suggested to build an additional water tank at the site. Also sprinklers will be installed at the garbage landfill site to prevent fire, he added.
He further said “We will arrange a borewell for the water source along with additional alternative water sources as well. All these arrangements will be made before the rainy season,” the Mayor added.
