Mangaluru: The Mangaluru district sub-Jail will be shifted to a 63 acre land in Mudipu, DGP (prison) Dr Satyanarayana Rao informed on Tuesday February 2.

Clash in district jail yet again; two inmates injured-1

Rao, who is on a visit here to inspect the land and complete the formalities, also visited to the current jail and took stock of the situation there.

The sub-jail has been in news in the recent past for infamous incidents of murder and fights between inmates.

“The establishment of new jail will take about 3-5 years. Hence, security measures will be upgraded to ensure smooth functioning,” Rao had after a thorough inspection. He said that jammers have already arrived and will be installed by this month end. In addition, CCTV surveillance will be enhanced by installing more cameras in the jail here, he added.

New recruits to Mangaluru jail

Currently, only 18 police personnel in place of 28 have been deployed in the jail, out of which 6 are women. Speaking on this, Rao said that 320 new warders have been recruited in the state and the final list has been announced. All the vacant positions in Mangaluru will be filled on priority as the jail here needs more attention.

Rao said that there is reluctance among the police personnel to serve in Mangaluru jail for various reasons.

Screening system to be upgraded

Admitting that there is security lapse in the jail, he said that frisking will be upgraded. Since then, every single visitor irrespective of their stature, will be subject to screening and their entries shall be registered. Rao was answering the reporters on finding mobile phones, chargers and sim cards with the jail inmates and on rumours of lawyers visiting the jail, supplying them the devices.
Regarding the double murder case, he said that there is involvement of human element. “The departmental inquiries are in progress. Action has been taken against those personnel allegedly involved in helping the culprits,” he said. According to Rao, the reason for frequent fights in the jail is the exceeding number of inmates. “The capacity of the jail here is 210. But, as many as 310 individuals are housed here. Also, most of the inmates are young,” he said adding that the conditions are same in all the jails across the state.

Special courses to police

Slamming the jail authorities here, Rao said that the staff is not motivated enough, due to which their efficiency has taken a beating.

He advised them to read media reports and take cue from those articles. “The jail police here sit within the four walls and think of themselves as kings,” he said adding that the jail staff needs to build network with the public and develop a friendly attitude.

Rao informed that the police here will be given courses on leadership, reasoning and approach among others.

He is scheduled to visit the Hiriadka jail tomorrow from where two inmates escaped recently.
