Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to grant trade licences to all categories of businesses and trade for terms of up to five years beginning with the financial year 2023 – 24 as per the advise from the Urban Development Department.

In a notification dated October 20, 2022, the UDD stated that despite the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976’s provision for the issuance of trade licences to all types of business establishments for up to five years, many corporations were only giving permits for one year. As a result, it was necessary to grant licences for a period of up to five years if the trader so desires, after obtaining necessary documents and collection, stated the notification.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka MCC Commissioner Akshy Sridhar said, “This is based on the notification given by the State Urban Development Department. The intension is to create ease of doing business as said in the release.”

Trade permits valid for five years will be granted after examining the required documents. New document submission and examinations are required once after the expiry of five years. Those who want a five-year licence should pay the whole five-year licence fee at once.

The entrepreneur must also strictly abide by the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and Plastic Waste Management Rules to obtain the trade licence. The property tax must be paid within the allotted time and if they fail, the license would be cancelled. The licence would be cancelled if reports from any Government Department or authority required it, as well as if the trader violated any licence conditions.

When asked about the responses from the traders he said, “We will have to wait till two to three months to see the responses.” He also mentioned that the process has already started and it will be done online.
