Mangaluru: According to locals, the water of the Mrityunjaya River, which flows from Charmady side towards Kalmanja via Mundaje, has been contaminated here and there.
The River Mrityunjaya merges with Netravathi near Pajiradka in Kalmanja Village and flows further.
The level of the Mrityunjaya River, which has a good flow in the summer, has come down this time, and here too, like the Netravati River, there is only water in puts at some places.
The water in these ponds was found to be contaminated on Tuesday March 21. There is a lot of algae in the pit areas and the water has turned muddy.
While sand mining and fishing are not taking place in these pit areas of the river, it is not known why the water has suddenly contaminated.
On Monday evening, a strong gust of wind struck the river area near Mundaje Bridge on the National Highway through which the Mrityunjaya River flows and moved towards the low-lying areas of the River.
Vishwanath Bende of Mundaje, an eyewitness, said that there was a lot of dust that could have entered the river water. The water stored in the river ponds in the vicinity of Mundaje, Arekkallu, Balyarakapu, Janabailu, Kadamballi, Koppala Moolaru, Anangalli, Kudenchi in the River surroundings, is muddy and contaminated, making it impossible for the people of the area to use the water for their day-to-day use.
The rising temperatures have led to cold, heat, cloudy weather andnwatwr receding in the river, causing panic among the locals.
Locals also suspect that sand mining in the area may have led to water scarcity.
