Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has planned to draft a separate bylaw for advertisements to restrict unauthorised hoardings and advertisements within its limits.

The bylaw’s main aim is to keep the City beautiful by prohibiting unlicensed hoardings in identified areas. In addition to setting up rules for advertisements and hoardings, the City Corporation plans to increase revenue through permissions and penalties.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka MCC Commissioner Akshy Sridhar said, “Discussions in this regard has been held but the bylaw is yet to be drafted. After completing the draft, we will circulate it for public opinion. A team is already in operation under Deputy Commissioner Dr. Rajendra K. V. to keep an eye on illegal hoardings within the City limits. Now, the survey of the advertisement is already being undertaken. We will get an exact picture once the survey is done. Then we will look to monetise all the advertisements and hoardings.”

He further said, “We plan to place QR codes on each advertisement so that we may track it. This will allow MCC to identify when the advertisement was installed, its size, and the maximum distance allowed, among other things. This modality hasn’t been confirmed yet, but we are looking into it.”

When asked about revenue collection Akshy said, “We are already collecting revenue from advertisements. However, many people do not install banners in authorised locations, and there are other unauthorised locations as well. Even that we have to regularise and monetise.”
