Mangaluru: The election for Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is already underway, with current Mayor Premananda Shetty’s term coming to an end soon.

The BJP, which has 44 corporators in the 60-member city corporation, is expected to win the mayoral election this time as well. However, within the party circles, the selection of suitable candidates is calculated and argued. With the State Assembly elections approaching, there are discussions of having a strong candidate for Mayor.

This year, the Mayoral seat is also open to the general category. Diwakar Pandeshwar and Premananda Shetty have become elected Mayors of the City following the MCC elections.

According to sources, the party has discussed candidate selections several times. Kiran Kumar Kodikal of Bangrakuluru ward is said to be a front-runner for the position. A proposal has also been made for Sudhir Shetty, a veteran BJP politician, to be the next Mangaluru Mayor. The candidate’s name is expected to announce on March 1, just before the elections start on March 2.
